Hi Rob,

If it helps, I normally have the Compaq partition, followed by a /boot 
partition of about 20MB, a swap partition, and a / partition (or extended, 
with /home /var etc.)
I install LILO in the MBR, and set a LILO boot option to point to the F10 
partition (DOS).

This works on every Compaq I've installed Linux on, from 486 & pentium PCs, 
and servers from SystemPro upwards.
