I have never managed to get my dual-proc AP400s to boot (fully).
Compaq people have always started to say to fix the APIC settings, as
in the server. Of course, the workstations appear not to provide this
BIOS choice...

This is despite the fact that this page:
http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/linux/systems.htm
says the workstations are supported.
