What on earth are you talking about? Have you read the specifications for
the driver? Have you been to the cpqarray home page? Have you opened the c
source to the cpqarray.c to see if there is information there?

The original Smart controller (in fact all Compaq array controllers) are
supported by the cpqarray driver. What more do you want? Installation
instructions? OK, I have a page at http://www.geocities.com/rlcomp_1999,
you will also find references to JeePeePee's site, he has good info there as
well. On my page get the SIM710.html document for directions on how to
install Linux on the Original Smart. The devices section will describe each
of the supported array controllers.

Here's an excerpt from the /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/cpqarray.c file:
struct board_type products[] = {
	{ 0x0040110E, "IDA", &smart1_access },
	{ 0x0140110E, "IDA-2", &smart1_access },
	{ 0x1040110E, "IAES", &smart1_access },
	{ 0x2040110E, "SMART", &smart1_access },
	{ 0x3040110E, "SMART-2/E", &smart2e_access },
	{ 0x40300E11, "SMART-2/P", &smart2_access },
	{ 0x40310E11, "SMART-2SL", &smart2_access },
	{ 0x40320E11, "Smart Array 3200",	&smart2_access },
	{ 0x40330E11, "Smart Array 3100ES",	&smart2_access },
	{ 0x40340E11, "Smart Array 221",	&smart2_access },
	{ 0x40400E11, "Integrated Array",	&smart4_access },
	{ 0x40500E11, "Smart Array 4200",	&smart4_access },
	{ 0x40510E11, "Smart Array 4250ES",	&smart4_access },

You know I think this is C@#! (see previous messages below). This
controller SMART ARRAY controller (Assembly number 003596-002 and Spare
Part # 181132-001) will work with all of the Microsoft versions of
NT/2000 . I have install Solaris 2.5.1 on it just fine. It will work
with SCO. I would like to use Linux. Compaq in the past has always
support major releases of NOS.

Why they have left us with legacy equipment out in the cold I do not
know. I have always used Compaq servers since the SystemPro's, and
never had this type of problem. I guess I will have to install a
different NOS, maybe see if Solaris 2.8 will work. Run Solaris on these
units at this time, however wanted to give Linux a shot.

Sorry about the reply to my own mail, yet I seem to have found some =
information regarding my problem! My Proliant 1500 contains the original =
version of the SMART ARRAY controller. (Assembly number 003596-002 and =
Spare Part # 181132-001) This is no longer supported by compaq and the =
latest firmware version is 2.26 (which I already have). I believe the =
reason I am getting an error during the install of Red Hat is because =
this is an old version of the SMART SCSI ARRAY card and is not =
completely supported in the driver.

Now that I have solved one problem I am faced with several new ones.

Where can I find a newer SMART ARRAY controller (SMART-2/P or so)? How =
much will it cost me? Is it worth it?

Can I just run the HDDs off of the imbedded (53c825) SCSI controller? =
Are there any implications for doing this? Would it be easier to add a =
secondary SCSI controller and just run the HDDs off that?

I thank anyone that responds to this in advance as I am quite eager to =
get this box up and running.

  Subject: [compaqandlinux] RH 6.1/PLt 1500

  Good Evening,

I have what should be everything needed for the install (boot disks, =
4.70 of the proliant configuration disk) i have the drives and system =
setup for linux yet during the install it asks for the cd-rom driver. I =
tell it to use the 53C8XX driver and it tells me that if found that =
devices...i go to add the driver for the array card SMART ARRAY/2 and =
once i select it it give me an error in the background (i can't read it, =
there is a box in my way) and the isntallation does not find any disks.

  Anyone else been through this?

  Any suggestions?

  TIA

  Paul J Rozanski
